1/11/2024 0 Comments Newborn Photography for Beginners: Tips and Tricks to Capture Those Precious Early DaysWelcome to the world of newborn photography! If you're just beginning your journey as a photographer in this enchanting and challenging field, you've chosen a path filled with adorable subjects, memorable moments, and invaluable learning opportunities. With over 9 years experience photographing newborns in Kent, learn some of my tips and tricks on starting out l. Capturing the essence of a newborn is not just about pointing and shooting; it involves patience, understanding, and a gentle touch. Here's a beginner's guide to help you navigate the adorable world of newborn photography. Understanding Newborn Photography Newborn photography is a genre that focuses on capturing images of babies typically within the first two weeks of life. This period is favored because newborns are more likely to remain asleep and pliable, making it easier to pose them in those classic adorable baby poses. Safety First The safety of the baby is paramount. Never compromise on safety for the sake of a photo. Ensure that the environment is warm and comfortable, and all props and surfaces are safe and sanitized. Always have a helper or a parent nearby to assist with the baby. Timing is Key The best time to photograph newborns is during their first 5-14 days. During this period, they sleep more deeply and curl up easily into those sweet, womb-like positions. Plan your session around the baby’s feeding and sleep schedule to maximise cooperation. Equipment Essentials You don’t need a lot of fancy equipment to start. A good quality DSLR or mirrorless camera, a 50mm or 35mm lens, and a few props like blankets, wraps, and hats are enough. Although I use and prefer studio light, natural light will also give great results and is a great starting place. Try to schedule shoots during daylight hours near a large window. Master the Environment Create a soothing environment. A warm room and a white noise machine can work wonders in keeping a baby calm and asleep. Remember, a comfortable baby is a photogenic baby. Patience is a Virtue Newborn photography sessions can be lengthy. Patience is key. Be prepared for feeding breaks, nappy changes, and occasional fussiness. It's all part of the experience and requires a calm and adaptable approach. Simplicity is Beautiful When starting, keep your setups simple. Minimalist approaches often result in the most timeless photographs. Avoid overly complicated poses and props that can distract from the baby’s natural beauty. Practice Safe Posing Educate yourself on safe baby poses. Avoid any pose that could put the baby at risk. Simple poses like having the baby lie on their back or being held in their parents' arms are classic and safe. There are plenty of newborn safety courses available in your local area. Continuous Learning Attend workshops, watch tutorials, and read books on newborn photography. Continuous learning is vital to refine your skills, learn new techniques, and stay updated on safety practices. Post-Processing Learn basic editing skills. Often, newborn photos require some level of post-processing to perfect the final image. This could include adjusting lighting, color correction, and retouching. Build a Portfolio Start building your portfolio. Offer discounted sessions to friends and family or collaborate with local maternity and baby stores. A strong portfolio is key to attracting clients. Newborn photography is a rewarding field that requires not just technical skill but also a deep understanding of the delicate subjects you are working with. As you embark on this journey, remember that every session is a learning experience and an opportunity to create lasting memories for families. Keep practicing, stay patient, and most importantly, enjoy the process of capturing these precious early days of life. Tags:
Welcome to our latest blog post where we dive into the enchanting world of newborn photography. If you're a parent looking to capture those fleeting first weeks or a photographer seeking to refine your craft, you're in the right place. Today, we'll explore essential tips, current trends, and how to make the most of these precious moments. 1. **The Golden Hour: Timing is Everything in Newborn Photography** Newborns are best photographed within the first 5-14 days of life. During this period, they sleep more soundly and curl up easily into adorable poses. Scheduling your session within this window can make a significant difference in the outcome of the photos. 2. **Safety First: Ensuring a Secure Environment** Safety is paramount in newborn photography. Always use a spotter or a parent to stay close to the baby during poses. The studio should be warm to keep the baby comfortable, and all props should be sanitized and safe. 3. **Natural Poses vs. Styled Shots: What's Trending?** While styled shots with props and outfits are popular, there's a growing trend towards more natural, lifestyle-oriented photos. These candid shots capture the essence of the newborn and their interaction with their environment, offering a timeless appeal. 4. **Lighting Techniques: Soft and Subtle** Soft, diffused lighting is your best friend in newborn photography. It flatters the delicate features of the baby and creates a warm, serene atmosphere. Natural light is ideal, but if you're shooting indoors, softbox lights can be a great alternative. 5. **Color Palettes and Textures: Enhancing Your Photos** Choosing the right colors and textures can elevate your newborn photos. Soft pastels, neutrals, and organic materials add a gentle touch, while vivid colors can bring energy and fun to your images. 6. **Patience is Key: Working with Newborns** Remember, newborns work on their own schedule. Patience is crucial in newborn photography. Be prepared for feeding breaks, diaper changes, and unexpected naps. These moments can also provide opportunities for candid shots. 7. **Post-Processing: Subtle Edits Make a Big Difference** When it comes to editing newborn photos, less is often more. Gentle retouching to smooth skin and enhance lighting can make your photos stand out while keeping the natural beauty of the baby. Newborn photography is a rewarding field that combines artistry with a deep understanding of infants' needs. Whether you’re a parent looking to document your baby’s first days or a photographer keen on mastering this genre, remember these tips to create beautiful, safe, and timeless images. Capturing the perfect baby photo is a challenge that many parents face. It can be especially difficult when you are at home and relying on your phone to capture the moment. However, with a few tips and tricks, you can take nicer baby photos on your phone at home.
1. Lighting: One of the most important factors in taking a nice photo is lighting. Natural light is best, so try to position your baby near a window or in a well-lit room. Avoid using your phone's flash as it can create harsh shadows and make your baby look washed out. 2. Background: Choose a simple and clean background that won't distract from your baby. A plain wall or a simple blanket can work well. You can also use props like stuffed animals or toys to add some interest to the photo. 3. Get down to their level: Instead of taking photos from above, try getting down to your baby's level. This will create a more intimate and personal photo that captures your baby's perspective. 4. Capture their personality: Try to capture your baby's personality in the photo. Are they curious, playful, or sleepy? Let their personality shine through in the photo. 5. Timing: Timing is everything when it comes to baby photos. Wait for the right moment when your baby is happy and alert. You can also try taking photos during their naptime or after a feeding when they are calm and content. 6. Edit: Don't be afraid to edit your photos to enhance their quality. You can use apps like VSCO or Snapseed to adjust the brightness, contrast, and saturation of the photo. 7. Patience: Taking the perfect baby photo takes patience. Don't get discouraged if it takes a few tries to get the right shot. Keep trying and have fun with it. In conclusion, taking nicer baby photos on your phone at home is possible with a few simple tips and tricks. Remember to focus on lighting, background, and capturing your baby's personality. With a little bit of patience and practice, you can capture beautiful and memorable photos of your little one. Tags:

Playing with your baby is not only a great way to bond but also an opportunity for them to learn and develop new skills. Here are some games to play with your baby that are not only fun but also beneficial for their growth and development.
1. Peek-a-boo: A classic game that never gets old, peek-a-boo is a great way to teach your baby about object permanence. Cover your face with your hands or a blanket and then reveal yourself while saying "peek-a-boo!" Your baby will be delighted by the surprise and will learn that objects still exist even when they are out of sight. 2. Singing: Singing to your baby is a great way to soothe them and help them develop an appreciation for music. You can sing lullabies, nursery rhymes, or even make up your own songs. Your baby will love hearing your voice and will begin to recognize different sounds and rhythms. 3. Sensory play: Sensory play is a great way to stimulate your baby's senses and help them explore the world around them. You can create a sensory bin filled with different textures like rice, beans, or water. Let your baby explore the bin with their hands or feet and watch as they discover new sensations. 4. Tummy time: Tummy time is important for your baby's development as it helps them strengthen their neck and back muscles. You can make tummy time more fun by placing toys or a mirror in front of your baby to encourage them to lift their head and engage with the world around them. 5. Reading: Reading to your baby is not only a great way to bond but also helps develop their language and cognitive skills. Choose books with bright colors and simple pictures and read in a soothing voice. Your baby will love hearing the sound of your voice and will begin to recognize different words and sounds. Playing with your baby is an important part of their development and can be a lot of fun for both of you. These games are just a few examples of the many ways you can engage with your baby and help them learn and grow. Remember to have fun and enjoy this special time with your little one. Tags:

Many clients each year ask whether I offer outdoor family photography so when better to start than 2022! These sessions are very relaxed, chilled and an absolute blast for the little clients. We aim for fun, connection and capturing personality! We shot this session in the beautiful countryside of Capstone Farm park, with rolling hills and brassy grass, it makes the perfect backdrop. Golden hour is what we aim for, so we get that gorgeous soft light. When the kids are playing with mum and dad, those natural smiles just naturally happen! Most of the time, they even forget that they're being photographed.

5/23/2022 0 Comments Pregnancy tips for New Mums: A blog post around pregnancy tips and 'What I wish I knew' beforePregnancy is a phase of life that many people find exciting and fascinating, and at times, a little (a lot) scary. There are so many things to remember and to learn about being pregnant that it can be hard to keep up. This blog will help you out with some of those 'whish I'd have known' tips during pregnancy.
1. You don't need as much stuff as you think you do! it's easy to get carried away with what you need (and can be fun shopping), but as long as you have the essentials, don't get too worked up if you can't afford to get that new fancy electric nappy bin. 2. Baby movements are different for everyone and your baby will usually have a pattern of their own. If you're worried at all though, give your midwife or hospital a call, they would rather you be seen or they'll reassure you over the phone. And if you're still worried, ask to be seen even if its just to put your mind at rest. 3. Don't expect dads to feel the same. While mums tend to (usually but not always) get that instant bond the minute you see those two lines come up on that pregnancy stick, that seems to usually only happen for dads when baby arrives. As much as you can get them involved (and definitely do), by grabbing their hands when baby kicks or looking through the baby names book for the millionth time, but don't get disheartened if they don't feel that instant rush of love...it'll come. 4. You will miss your bump. While most of us won't actually miss being pregnant (I mean, it's not exactly glamorous), you will likely miss your bump. Maybe not straight away, but months or even years later! So get your camera out, try and catch your baby rolling and prodding inside, those videos will be lovely to look back on. Do a weekly or monthly bump growth photo and turn them into a collage and get a professional shoot booked, you won't regret it.. 5. You don't need tons of maternity clothes. They're expensive, and you'll only get a few months worth wear. A pair of jeans and leggings will do. Get a few cheap stretchy tops a size up or some floaty dresses for the summer? There are plenty of choices. We hope you enjoyed our article on 'what I wish I knew' during pregnancy. Pregnancy is not just a fun and exciting time, but it can also be very frustrating and difficult. If you have any questions about our list of tips or you feel we should add something, feel free to post a comment. We would love to hear from you! Tags:
2/3/2022 0 Comments TrainingWhen looking for a newborn photographer, always ask if they are insured and trained. You would probably assume they are, but it is an unregulated industry, meaning anyone can do it (with or without training). You would never go to a hairdresser or beauty salon knowing they weren't trained so you would never knowingly take your little prescious bundle to an untrained photographer. This little pose (called Froggy), is actually made up of two different images. This is what training is for - you wouln't necessarily know this. This is how you would safely perform this pose, that way, baby is supported at all times. A little behind the scence of how this pose is safely done. And of course, baby is completely comfortable, he feels safe and warm and entirely unfazed. Another quick note - not all babies love this pose, and I would never force them into it. You'll soon know if baby doesn't want to, and as little as they are, they are, ultimately, the boss :-).
