October Half term is shortly approaching and where most families with kids would be planning some fun filled days out, unfortunately, Coronavirus might be putting a downer on that. Let's not forget, most children in the UK were off school for around 6 months so this new full term is likely to have exhausted their minds. If yours are anything like my children, they are definitely ready for a break from school. But with most activites not running or at the least, minimum capacity, what are we left with? Let's start with what we can do at home! Pumpkin Carving Along with pumpkin picking (which we'll get to), there's the everlasting tradition of carving the pumpkin. Why not get even more adventurous this half term ? We're always usually so busy, it usually ends up being a last minute activity (or job, however you want to see it)! So why not make a whole day of it? Get the kids to research some designs, perhaps with a little hot chocoloate on the side! Or they could design their own; it's always best to jot it down on paper first or make a rough drawing. Obviously, for the little ones, they might need a bit of help, it'll be a great to get your own creative side out! If you'd rather not carve the pumpkin (which involves getting messy), why not use paint, glitter or sharpies! There are many ways to get into the spirit of Halloween. Family film day/night Rainy day? How about a pyjama day? Watch films, bake cakes, get the board games out. You could even print some free Halloween games from Happiness is Homemade. Get the kids to help decorate the house with pictures of pumpkins or ghosts, there are endless ways to get creative and will easily fill your day. Pumkin Picking So it may not be exactly how it used to be, but most places are still operating this year, albeit, slightly differently. Personally, our family used to arrange to meet with our friends families and pumkin pick together as a group. Now we may not be able to do that this year, but at least we can still take the kids. Check some of the local pumkin farms in Kent (Pumkin Moon , PYO Pumkins , Chiltern Manor Farm) as most of them are offering timed tickets so make sure you book now to avoid disappointment. Look at it this way, perhaps no more queing down the road trying to get in. Autumnal Woodland Walk We are so spoilt with choice here in Kent for woodland walks, known as the garden of England, we have such beautiful countryside. Don the wellies and thick scalves, wrap up warm and go on an adventure. Chestnuts are out at this time of year, so get the kids to collect them, they will absolutely love it! Have a go at roasting them yourself at home, this is definitely a family experience. Being a photographer, I absolutely love the range of colours that Autumn produces, the reds, oranges and yellows are a stuning backdrop. Collect the falling maple leaves and get creative, there are many ideas online, we truly are spoilt for choice! Don't forget the hot chocolate when you get home. Even that can be an activity! Grab the marshmallows, chocolate shavings, whipped cream, sprinkles and get the kids to add all the topppings themselves. These are all memories in the making , get the camera out and photograph these moments! With winter just around the corner, let's make the most of the weather before we have to dig the snow boots out. With many things to do (indoors and outdoors), I'm confident you can fill your half term days with fun and laughter. And don't feel guilty if you just feel like having a lazy day, or a few. Sometimes we just need to recuperate, especially in these presedented times. It can be frustrating to see families on social media, but we all know that sometimes it's not always as it seems. So don't stress yourselves out, make sure you have fun and enjoy the time with your family!

10/7/2020 0 Comments Baby change bagsSo as my own due date is creeping up, slowly but surely, I'm starting to think about baby changing bags. Mind you, now that I'm in the 3rd trimester, I've got no doubt that it will start to drag. I'm trying to enjoy these last couple of months of pregnancy, but it's difficult when you're struggling with heartburn, stretching stomach, itching etc... I could go on! We're allowed to moan in pregnancy, right?! I'd take all this over the first trimester sickness though, count yourself really lucky if you manage to forgo this delightful symptom. We all know babies are expensive, and as my other boys are much older, we didn't have anything. So I've been gradually picking things up every few weeks so its not too much of a shock to the wallet. Also managed to get a beautiful babychange unit from Facebook marketplace! Definitely have a look for some second hand items, you can save so much money and sometimes just as good as buying new. In fact, for us, even better as we picked it up fully built... result! With that all in mind, start picking little things up along with your weekly shop to help spread the cost out a bit. Things like nappies, wipes, cotton wool, breast pads etc are pretty cheap individually, but leaving it last minute and buying all at once is going to hurt a little. So I'm only 29 weeks, but have managed quite a little stash already. And this month, the changing bag is what I'm researching now! Since I've had my boys, things have changed baby shopping wise and there's so many different things you can get now, it can be overwhelming. You've got backpacks, messenger bags, shoulder bags and so on! Best thing to do is get onto Amazon, John Lewis, even Smyths toys and get looking for what suits you. Backbacks are great if you have other children and need to keep your hands free, also great if you're thinking of using a sling! Jem + Bea do soem lovely leather backpacks, they don't even look like baby bags. Messenger bags are great for popping on your pram and you can get some lovely designs... the ones from Pink Lining are stunning. Make sure its practical though, check for pockets (insulated bottle pockets are great), and some bags have a little side easy grab pocket which allows you to reach something at the bottom of the bag without digging from the top, amazing! I'll pop some links to some that have caught my eye and why I love it! Quite a few of my lovely newborn photography clients come in with this bag and it comes highly recommended and such a bargain. I do love the fact that its a backpack and you have pockets galore on this bag, 19 in fact! There's nothing worse than trying to dig through a full bag for that dummy while baby is crying. There's a pocket for everything, including an insulated one that will fit a couple of bottles at least. Another big plus is the zipped pocket at the back for the 'bottom of the bag' access, I think this feature is brilliant! Why didn't they come up with this idea when my others were small?! The integrated pushchair clips are also a bonus! The reviews look very good too, so looks like its well made, despite the low price. This one is definitely a good contender! Now this one is super stylish, it doesn't even look like a baby change bag. Its a little pricier than most, but it's actually made of 100% Python embossed water-resistant nylon. Yup no idea either, but it looks beautiful. The little gold zip detailing is really quite lovely as well. There's quite a lot less pockets than the one above (it only has 4 pockets actually) so if this is a must for you then the Jem + Bea probably isn't the one for you. This little changing bag would be my go to fashion bag, its gorgeous! And last but not least, the Yummy mummy apples and pears. Now these Pink Lining baby change bags were all the rage when mine were young so they've been popular for a very long time. And no wonder, they are just gorgeous. So much so that dad isn't going to be too impressed with carrying the bag so keep this in mind! This one is currently on sale (October 2020) and I love all the little extras you get with it. You get a little stroller organiser bag, a wash bag, bottle holder and a wallet! I particularly love the stroller organiser bag. It velcro's to the pushchair and you can pop your keys, phone, dummy, couple of nappies or a toy etc for easy reach, I love it! The bag itself has lots of different compartments and components, some you wouldn't even think of, including a detachable mirror. This one is the inbetween of all three in my opinion. Its practical, but also very cute and trendy! No wonder it's a minefield out there when it comes to choosing, that's just the problem, there's far too much choice. Tags:
